Whether you celebrate with a seafront fireworks extravaganza, a tour of military history, or an appreciation of the great outdoors, Washington state has a diversity of options, according to former Lt. Cmdr. Dana Clay, USN, who now serves as president of MOAA’s Kitsap (Wash.) Chapter.

A festival in Seattle, dubbed Seafair 4th of July, is a dramatic way to experience Independence Day in the Pacific Northwest — for free. It includes food, games, and preshow activities that culminate with a fireworks presentation.

The multiweek festival features events across the Puget Sound area, including Seattle Fleet Week, which since 1950 has celebrated those who serve our country. It traditionally starts with a parade of ships through Elliott Bay, followed by a week of activities.

If you’re interested in military history, Washington is the place to be, given its “defense work during the world wars,” said Clay, who is a longtime state resident.

In Seattle, check out more than 175 aircraft and spacecraft at the Museum of Flight — the largest independent, nonprofit air and space museum in the world, according to the organization.

Go back further in history by visiting a spot where American and British soldiers celebrated the Fourth of July together. Take a ferry ride (you might see an orca) to San Juan Island National Historical Park in Friday Harbor, where in 1859 the U.S. and Great Britain nearly went to war.

The free United States Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport has the most comprehensive display of torpedoes in the country and features exhibits from the Revolutionary War through modern operations.

The Puget Sound Navy Museum in Bremerton, which is also free, is dedicated to the naval heritage of the Pacific Northwest. An exhibit celebrating 250 years of U.S. Navy history is scheduled to open in September 2025.

You can also head outdoors to soak up America’s beauty with a visit to Mount Rainier.

“I have been all over the world,” Clay said. “I have been inside the great pyramids, I’ve been to Pompeii, the Great Barrier Reef. My favorite sight, no kidding, is Mount Rainier.”

Something Extra: At veteran-owned Harbor Haute Dogs in Port Orchard, try a hot dog loaded with chili, cheese, and peanut butter. “I know that sounds disgusting, but it is delicious,” Clay said.
