Celebrating the Fourth of July California-style includes elaborate fireworks displays over the ocean and “the biggest Fourth of July parade west of the Mississippi.”

Big Bay Boom, San Diego’s elaborately choreographed fireworks show launched from barges spaced along the bay, attracts hundreds of thousands of spectators each year. Visitors can view the show from the flight deck of the historic USS Midway at the USS Midway Museum, where they can enjoy a family-style picnic, kids’ activities, live entertainment, and flight simulators.

Tours are also available of the Midway, the longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century, commissioned in 1945. Or set sail on one of several fireworks-viewing dinner cruises offered by tour boat companies.

Huntington Beach bills its annual July 4 parade, which is more than 120 years old, as the largest west of the Mississippi River. The parade usually features about 150 groups, including military units, local nonprofits, equestrians, celebrities, marching bands, police and fire departments, and event sponsors. Parade day is topped off with a fireworks show over the Huntington Beach pier in the evening and a Main Street block party July 5.

“While we’re still finalizing details, we’re planning to expand on the traditional parade by incorporating elements that honor the nation’s military history and our local heroes,” said Jennifer Carey, Huntington Beach deputy city manager. “It will be a celebration to remember.”

California’s plentiful theme parks also go all out for the holiday. For instance, Legoland’s Red, White, and BOOM offers a mix of dance parties, fireworks, and lawn activities.

Something Extra: Get your adrenaline pumping by booking a 20-minute flight in a P-51 Mustang or T-6 Texan at the Palm Springs Air Museum. The collection includes everything from a P-40 Warhawk to an AH-1 Cobra and an F/A-18 Hornet. Museum admission is free for veterans on July 4.
