The holidays aren’t without their hurdles, but the support group charged with keeping servicemembers stuffed for the season still delivered the goods.
Christmas meals for servicemembers around the world, including those at sea, arrived courtesy of the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), whose plans for this time of year begin in the spring.
The tally for this Christmas, according to a Dec. 18 press release:
- 101,943 pounds of turkey
- 85,439 pounds of beef
- 40,615 pounds of ham
- 24,495 pounds of shrimp
- 4,339 cans of sweet potatoes
- 6,426 cases of pies and cakes
- 1,496 cases of eggnog

Not all of the Christmas cheer came easy for DLA officials, with a late change in the location of the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) and its carrier strike group leading to a rush to ensure the ships had holiday meals on board before they left Europe for the Caribbean.
Bird flu restrictions in Japan also created challenges, according to the news release, but DLA found “compliant turkeys” in time to greet the season.
The big meals came about a month after DLA delivered more than 152,000 pounds of turkey, 124,000 pounds of beef, and more goodies for Thanksgiving spreads across the globe.
