Veterans eligible for travel reimbursement from the VA now can submit claims directly from a mobile app, the department announced Aug. 11.

The VA Health and Benefits mobile app will prompt users if it identifies an appointment that may qualify for travel reimbursement. Users can click through provided options to confirm their appointment and can track the travel claim via the app.

The process covers "mileage-only" travel claims, per the announcement.

Travel reimbursement generally applies to veterans receiving an exam or care at a VA facility (or VA-approved care at another location) who meet certain disability requirements or fall below income thresholds. The full list of criteria is available on the VA website, along with instructions on filing a traditional paper claim.

VA beneficiaries with questions about the reimbursement process or seeking help with a specific claim can receive assistance from their facility's Beneficiary Travel contact or by calling (855) 574-7292 toll-free Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern.

The VA Health and Benefits app has been downloaded more than 3 million times, according to the Aug. 11 announcement. Users can refill and track prescriptions, message health care providers, review and submit evidence for claims and appeals, and access some health records.

For more information about the app, including instructional videos and contact information for technical support, visit the VA website.
