Senior Content Developer, MOAA

General Role:

Works collaboratively and creatively with members of the editorial team to identify, assign, and handle editorial and production requirements for Military Officer magazine, MOAA’s special publications, internal and external messaging, and content across digital platforms.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Serves as key editorial team member, collaborating with and accepting assignments from the managing editor. Chiefly, this relates to feature articles, magazine departments, and non-periodical association publications with an eye toward digital content. Edits assigned features, departments, and publications for length, accuracy, style, grammar, and clarity, and writes and produces original copy as required.
- Conceives, assigns, tracks, and produces content for MOAA’s communications channels.
- Drives innovation in content creation by incorporating trends, multimedia storytelling, and interactive digital formats that help meet MOAA’s mission.
- In partnership with other members of the editorial team, maintains and updates editorial content calendar for Military Officer magazine.
- Assists with the conception and delivery of internal presentations and other internal messaging.
- Collaborates with internal (staff) subject-matter experts to produce, track, and edit content for publication across MOAA’s communication channels.
- Coordinates with graphic designers, photographers and videographers to ensure visuals complement and enhance editorial content.
- Continuously seeks opportunities to improve content quality, engage audiences, and uphold the organization’s reputation as a trusted source of information.
- Corresponds with contributors and processes queries and manuscripts submitted for publication to include submission of invoices within budget guidelines.
- Responds to member queries regarding editorial content.
- In the absence of the managing editor, may be asked to perform functions of that position.
Skills, Attributes, Knowledge Required:
- Excellent communication and editing skills.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to exercise independent judgment while working under the pressure of deadlines.
- Comprehensive knowledge of professional writing, rewriting, grammar, copyediting, and substantive editing techniques.
- Familiarity with basic online publication principles and practices (e.g., search engine optimization).
- High-level critical thinking skills.
- Strong computer and desktop publishing skills, specifically in a Macintosh and Microsoft Office environment.
- Familiarity with Adobe InDesign software and working knowledge of Associated Press style are desirable.
- Committed to continued training and learning.
- Personal character and integrity are non-negotiable.
Professional Qualifications and Education Requirements:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in journalism, mass communications, English, or related field.
- 3-5 years of experience in the communications field or equivalent.
- Experience or familiarity with the uniformed services is highly desirable.
