The Lone Star State shined in the annual Best Cities for Veterans to Live report from the personal finance site WalletHub, with three Texas cities placing in the top five.

Austin retained its top spot in the rankings of the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas, besting runner-up Madison, Wis., which moved up from third place last year. Scottsdale took third this time around, ahead of Texas cities Plano and Fort Worth.

Detroit finished last, one spot ahead of Newark, N.J. – a reversal from last year, when Newark rounded out the list.

The rankings, released Nov. 2, weigh four categories equally to determine the overall rankings, with each category housing a range of data sets:

  • Employment factors include job growth and veteran unemployment rate.
  • Economy considerations include affordability levels and income growth.
  • Quality of Life looks at veteran population and “friendliness” metrics that pull from other WalletHub surveys.
  • Health considerations include the number and quality of nearby VA facilities.

San Jose, Calif., led the way in employment and was third in health, but ranked 27th overall thanks largely to an 86th-place showing in the economy category. Gilbert, Ariz., took first in economy, while Orlando, Fla., was first in quality of life. Buffalo, N.Y., ranked first in health ahead of Long Beach, Calif., and a dozen other California cities that tied for third place.

The full breakdown of the rankings along with a deeper look into the survey methodology, is available on the WalletHub website.

The site also prepares an annual list of best states for veterans to retire, usually released around Memorial Day. South Carolina has taken top honors in that ranking for three straight years.
