Looking for an affordable getaway with a military connection? Through the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) program, the service academies offer lodging ranging from mountain cabins and campsites to suites in the heart of Annapolis, Md.
You don’t need an affiliation with an academy’s branch of service to stay there. Eligible MWR patrons can take advantage of lodging operated by other services, making these accommodations worth consideration.
U.S. Air Force Academy
Less than 25 miles from Colorado Springs, Colo., Farish Recreation Area offers a mountain escape at more than 9,000 feet, with views of Pikes Peak and plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors.
The recreation area’s stocked lakes make fishing popular, while canoes, kayaks, and other small watercraft are available for rent. More than 600 acres offer trails for hiking and mountain biking.
Lodging can accommodate up to 12 guests and ranges from furnished cottages and an indoor lodge to camper cabins, RV sites, and even a barn outfitted with twin beds.

U.S. Naval Academy
For a stay in the heart of Annapolis – with parking included — book a room at the Suites at USNA, located on the Naval Academy campus.
The historic building offers 16 one-bedroom suites. Each has a king or queen bed and a separate living area, and some include sleeper sofas.
Guests can take a guided or electric vehicle tour of the “Yard” as well as visit the U.S. Naval Academy Museum and its iconic domed chapel.

Just outside the gate, downtown Annapolis offers restaurants, shops, and plenty of U.S. history, making the suites a convenient home base for a weekend getaway. Across the Severn River, Naval Support Activity Annapolis offers an RV campground and the Cottages at Greenbury Point.

U.S. Military Academy
The U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., operates several recreation areas, including three with overnight lodging. All are located off post on the academy’s training areas, and they offer access to outdoor activities including fishing, hiking, swimming, and nonmotorized boating.
Round Pond Recreation Area, about 6 miles from the academy, offers the widest variety of accommodations. Log cabins sleep up to four but lack indoor plumbing, while a six-person cottage includes a full bathroom. RV and tent camping are also available. The facility operates seasonally from spring through fall.
Bull Pond Recreation Area, about a 15-minute drive from the academy, is an option for travelers looking for a little more comfort. Two furnished cottages — a log cabin and the aptly named Stone House — each accommodate up to four guests. The recreation area has a boathouse and private beach. Because availability is limited, reservations are offered through a lottery system.

Lake Frederick Recreation Area, about 11 miles from the academy, caters more to groups and rustic campers. This year-round facility has eight bunkhouses, 50 tent sites, and a community bathhouse. Rates, reservation windows, and seasonal availability vary, so check individual facilities before making travel plans.
Whether you’re looking for a mountain cabin, waterfront cottage, or trip to Annapolis, service academy lodging offers another reason to keep MWR in mind for your next getaway.
