TRICARE virtual health options allow beneficiaries to get certain types of health care through secure video, phone, or online appointments. But the options – and the costs – depend on who you are (active duty, family member, or retiree) and your TRICARE plan.

Costs for virtual visits are the same as for in-person care. Referral requirements are also the same as for in-person care. Active duty servicemembers need a referral for all telehealth visits.

TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select

Telehealth options available under these plans include urgent care, mental health, and specialty care such as speech therapy, diabetes support, and lactation support.

Virtual health providers differ by region. Click on your region to find out more: East | West | Region Map.

TRICARE For Life

Medicare will cover certain telehealth services under Part B through Dec. 31, 2027. You can find a list of sample services on the Medicare website.

For services not covered by Medicare but covered by TRICARE, TRICARE becomes the primary payer. You’ll owe the TRICARE deductible and cost shares connected to such services.

TRICARE Overseas

For TRICARE to cover telemedicine visits overseas:

  • The country where you’re receiving care must allow virtual visits.
  • Your provider must be TRICARE-authorized.
  • Your provider must be located in the country where you’re receiving care (U.S.-based practitioners aren’t eligible to provide telehealth services visits overseas).

Some types of visits require referrals or preauthorizations. Call the TRICARE Overseas contractor, International SOS, with any questions.

Military Health System Nurse Advice Line

All beneficiaries (except those enrolled in the US Family Health Plan or the TRICARE Prime Demo) are eligible to use the MHS Nurse Advice Line, which is available 24/7 by phone, web chat, and video chat.

The Nurse Advice Line provides health care advice from a registered nurse who can give recommendations for the appropriate level of care and help find an urgent or emergency care facility. Same- or next-day appointments can be scheduled through the service for those enrolled in a military hospital or clinic.

The Nurse Advice Line can also be used when traveling overseas and can coordinate with International SOS to help you find care outside the military health system.
