The Grand Canyon (Ariz.) Chapter kicked off Veterans Day week partnering with the Northern Arizona University (NAU) Veteran and Military Service Center to co-host the Veterans Day Tailgate on Nov. 8. More than 50 veterans enjoyed a free tailgate meal and complimentary tickets to NAU’s Military Appreciation football game.
Among the attendees were NAU President Dr. José Luis Cruz Rivera and former Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez, both joining in to thank veterans for their service.
From there, the celebration moved into the Walkup Skydome, where Grand Canyon Chapter member Lt. Col. Oliver Cole, USAF (Ret) — a 103-year-old World War II B-17 pilot with more than 50 combat missions — was honored as Veteran of the Game. Cole received the game ball from NAU mascot Louie the Lumberjack to the roaring applause of the crowd.

Adding to the moment, 14 Grand Canyon Chapter members were recognized during the first half with a special combat-service tribute video played on the stadium’s massive screen — a moving salute to their bravery and contributions.
The momentum continued Nov. 10 as the chapter teamed up with the Flagstaff American Legion to co-host a Red Cross Veterans Day blood drive.
“Members rolled up their sleeves — literally — by assisting with setup, staffing the MOAA information table, and donating much-needed blood to support the community,” said Col. Thomas Waddell, USAF (Ret), chapter present.
That evening, Waddell took the stage as a featured speaker at the 10th Annual NAU Veterans Day Flag Tribute. The ceremony, broadcast live on NAU TV and YouTube, included Native American dancers, the NAU Choir, guest speakers, and a moving outdoor Taps ceremony that closed the night with reverence and pride.
Festivities concluded Nov. 11 with chapter members honored at center court during halftime of the NAU women’s basketball game, receiving recognition for their dedicated service.
“From tailgates to tributes, from community service to center-court applause, the Grand Canyon Chapter’s Veterans Day week reflected the best of northern Arizona’s commitment to honoring those who serve,” said Waddell. “The chapter is proud of its outreach efforts and remains steadfast in upholding the MOAA motto to ‘Never Stop Serving.’”
