The federal job search process is extremely complex: First-time visitors to the USAJOBS.gov portal, the most common way to apply for federal employment, may be confused or overwhelmed.

When you’re ready to tackle the hiring process, keep these quick résumé tips in mind:

  1. Be on point. Have a targeted position in mind, and have a job-specific, tailored résumé to with it.
  2. Go long. Federal résumés might be several pages in length as opposed to the preferred two pages by the private sector.
  3. Start at the start. A chronological résumé style is generally your best option; it shows a track record of progressively increasing roles and responsibilities and demonstrates you have the right level of experience and grade for the desired position. Remember to be specific and cite accomplishments and achievements from your past experience that directly match the knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with the position.

And don’t ever underestimate the value of networking, even when pursuing federal employment opportunities.
