Mission

The mission of the Southern Nevada Chapter is to keep its members informed on matters which affect the military community, encourage the education of America and its future leaders through support of a local and national scholarship program, and provide an opportunity for member social interaction through frequent, varied, and informative meetings.

Information on Joining the Chapter

Go to our website https://moaalasvegas.org/new-members/ and complete and send the membership application or, contact Len Yelinek here for membership questions.  You may also call him at (702) 460-0769.  Dues are $25 per year.

Chapter Activities

The Chapter typically meets seven times per year, usually in the months of February, April, June, September, October, November and December. The specific meeting dates, times and locations are shown below (General Information) and announced in the chapter's award-winning newsletter, "The Camaraderie".  Three of our meetings generally consist of a social hour, meal, and a short business meeting, all held at the Wildhorse Golf Club.  In the June meeting, we partner with the local Service Academy Parents Club to host a send-off event for the year’s current Service Academy selectees, also at the Wildhorse.  The September meeting is our annual Champagne Brunch, held at the Wildhorse, and the December meeting is our Holiday Gala, held at Lawry’s Prime Rib.  Our biggest event of the year, the ROTC Awards Banquet, is held in October at one of our local high schools.  The 2025 event will be held at Cimarron-Memorial High School, recognizing award recipients from 26 high school JROTC programs and two senior ROTC programs.  Finally, we conduct six board meetings per year, usually at Charlie’s Lakeside Casino.

Legislative Issues

The Southern Nevada Chapter MOAA is strictly a non-partisan organization whose mission is to promote the interest of the military coalition, military officers and military families. The chapter vigorously promotes the legislative priorities of the Military Officers Association of America.  We ensure our membership receives this information via our Chapter Website and Newsletters, as well as periodic email blasts to the membership.

General Information

Planned events are identified on our Chapter Website at https://moaalasvegas.org/events/  All commissioned officers are welcomed.

About Our Chapter

The Southern Nevada Chapter of MOAA was established in August of 1965 as The Southern Nevada Retired Officer’s Club, an affiliate of The Retired Officer’s Association (TROA).  The association began with 70 Charter members.  The first President of the organization was Clinton S. Maupin, Colonel, US Army.

The chapter has been active for 60 years.  We have approximately 95 members.  Nineteen are surviving spouses whose chapter dues are free in recognition of many years of dedicated service as spouses of deceased military members.  The average age of our members is over 70 years. One of our goals is to recruit younger members.

From the year 2004 through 2024, the Chapter has received 21 MOAA Levels of Excellence Awards — One 4-Star Award and twenty 5-Star Awards.  Under IRS Provision 501-C-19, our chapter is a nonprofit and nonpartisan association that is a lobby for the benefit of all uniformed services.

The goals of the Southern Nevada Chapter are to promote the purpose and objectives of MOAA National, which is to pursue and further legislation, military benefits, education and scholarships and other objectives of the uniformed services, the nation and the Southern Nevada Military community.
