I’ve heard about a new kind of military ID card. I have a card with an ‘INDEF’ expiration date from about six years ago. Do I need a new card?

From the Expert: DoD began transitioning to a new type of ID card with updated security features, called the Next Generation Uniformed Services Identification Card, in July 2020.

In mid-2022, DoD announced it would be phasing older cards by sometime in 2026. The Defense Manpower and Data Center has not provided a specific date for the changeover, so MOAA suggests getting a replacement card before the end of 2025.

You can read more about the renewal/replacement process at MOAA.org/IDcards. It may be possible for you to order a replacement ID card online. Otherwise, you can make an appointment or find walk-in hours at the closest ID card facility by going to the DoD ID Card Office Online site.

If you can’t satisfy these requirements, then your next option would be to use the RAPIDS ID Card Office Online to locate and make an appointment at the closest ID card-issuing facility.
