Council and Chapter FAQs
Q. What is a MOAA chapter?
A. MOAA chapters are local, volunteer-run affiliates of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) that bring together active duty, retired, and former commissioned/warrant officers from all uniformed services, plus their spouses and surviving spouses, for camaraderie with a purpose, advocacy, and community service. These chapters, located across the U.S. and overseas, act as the local, grassroots arm for the national organization.

Q. Why should I join a MOAA chapter?
Q. How much does it cost to join a chapter?
A. The cost to join a local MOAA chapter is determined by each individual chapter and is independent of the cost to join MOAA National. Most chapters have tiered membership rates. While joint national/chapter membership is not required for physical chapters, you must be a MOAA National member to join a virtual chapter.
---
Q. How do I pay my chapter dues?
A. If the chapter you are trying to join participates in MOAA’s dues collection program, you can pay your dues online. Otherwise, you will need to contact the chapter directly to pay your dues.
---
Q. What kind of chapters does MOAA have?
A. MOAA has both physical (in-person) chapters and virtual chapters. While MOAA’s physical chapters are based on geographic location, virtual chapters are organized by a shared affinity (e.g., warfare specialty) and/or mission (e.g., health care advocacy).
---
Q. What are satellite chapters?
A. Satellite chapters are smaller groups that operate under the administration of a host chapter. They allow a local physical presence for a geographic area outside of the host chapter’s defined catchment area.
---
Q. How do I find my closest chapter?
A. The easiest way to find the closest MOAA chapter to you is to use the Chapter Locator. If you don’t find a local chapter near you, consider starting one: Email chapters@moaa.org or call (800) 234-6622 and ask to speak with a chapter affairs specialist.
---
Q. Can I join more than one chapter?
A. You may join as many chapters of MOAA as you wish.
---
Q. What’s the difference between chapters and councils?
A. A council is a statewide coalition of three or more chapters. Their role, in part, is to represent the consensus of chapter members, support and mentor leaders, and lead and coordinate state legislative matters in the interest of the military and veteran community.
