The Mojave Desert (Calif.) Chapter is investing in the next generation of servicemembers through its support of five high school Junior ROTC programs, the 18th Brigade of the California Cadet Corps, and the Excelsior High Desert Young Marines.

Throughout the year, the units hold daily and weekly training exercises, local and state competitions for promotions and awards, school assemblies to honor the cadets, and travel activities to boost their morale.

“Mojave Desert Chapter members participated in some of these activities, which help cadre and cadets feel comfortable in the community, knowing that they are accepted and supported in their efforts,” said Lt. Col. Michael Moticha, USAR (Ret), chapter president.

The chapter’s support culminates at its annual Youth Awards Ceremony, held this year on April 30 at the Elks Lodge 1877 in Victorville. During the evening’s program, 22 certificates of award/achievement, eight sets of MOAA medals and ribbons, and seven $500 scholarships and maintenance funds were awarded to the cadets and unit cadre, which consists of advisors, commanders, and instructors, Moticha said.

Additionally, all recipients received certificates of achievement from district and field representatives of local lawmakers.

Laura Villa, a field representative for Assemblymember Juan Carrillo, gave remarks during the ceremony, with Moticha presenting the awards.
