Editor’s Note: This sponsored interview is part of MOAA’s 2021 Transition Guide. A version of the guide appeared in the December 2020 issue of Military Officer magazine.

Who: Former Petty Officer 2nd Class Russell Benes, USN, franchise owner

Company: PuroClean, which provides restoration and remediation services to commercial and residential customers following property damages in North America.

Why is PuroClean a good fit for veterans?: PuroClean is a good fit for veterans because you are able to continue serving people during times of need like you did on active duty. You also get to apply the leadership skills you learned to manage people and make important decisions. Most importantly, veterans are comfortable following a proven system, and they understand the value of following instructions to help them grow and prosper.

What skills transfer well from a military career to PuroClean?: When you own your own business, you have to lead others and multitask, both of which are emphasized in the military. Plus, you have to be able to switch gears quickly. When you’re in the military, you remain on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. As a business owner, it can be similar if you’re responding to customers.

Another skill I learned that transferred well is that when you take on more responsibility, it’s important to learn how to delegate tasks.

Why should veterans consider a job with PuroClean?: It’s rewarding because you’re helping others during their time of need. Like the military, it involves service to others. Another aspect I like is that financial growth is all up to you, and you can set your own goals. At PuroClean, you have autonomy as a franchise owner, but you also have support from corporate leadership when you need it to help you continue to grow your business.
