COL Henry L. (Butch) Hinkle, USA (Ret) 1905-1986
He served in the Third Armored Division in World War II, went in on the Normandy Beach invasion and fought in Northern France and Germany. He later served additional tours in Germany, Guam, Okinawa, Turkey, Fort Churchill, Canada and at various Army installations and posts in the US. His decorations included the Army Commendation Medal with two clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with two hourglasses (30 years), Pre-Pearl Harbor Medal, American Defense Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal with three battle stars, World War II Victory Medal, Occupation Medal –Japan and Europe, French Victory Medal and the French Croix de Guerre. He was a Life Member of TROA.
Dorothy A. Hinkle 1916-2006
Dorothy grew up in Springfield, Massachusetts. She was a graduate of the Katharine Gibbs School, Boston MA, and attended Wheaton College, Norton MA. She worked as an Executive Secretary and Administrative Assistant in New York City for the Rockefeller Foundation and for a Wall Street law firm. She met Butch while she was serving as secretary to the US Army Attaché, American Embassy, Ankara, Turkey.
Colonel Hinkle excelled at making miniature soldiers, which he assembled and painted in authentic uniforms. Mrs. Hinkle enjoyed collecting dolls from foreign countries.
Mrs. Hinkle left a portion of her estate to the MOAA Scholarship Fund, providing Designated Scholarships to many deserving children. She is a member of the Patriot Society for having contributed more than $500,000 to the MOAA Scholarship Fund.
