Mission

The mission of the Athens (Georgia) Area Chapter (GA-02) of the Military Officers Association of America (AAMOAA) is consistent with the principles, goals and strategic initiatives of our state and national organizations. The spirit of ‘never stop serving’ embodies our advocacy for veterans, their families, and issues related to the needs of our veteran community. In our geographic area, AAMOAA supports 9 JROTC Units at area high schools and 2 UGA ROTC Detachments.

Information on Joining the Chapter

Membership is open to retired or former commissioned or warrant officers and widows of former members who served in any of the eight US uniformed services. Active-duty officers are encouraged to join. Chapter members should also be members of the MOAA National Organization. To become a member please contact the Chapter Secretary at AAMOAA.Secretary@gmail.com. The first-year membership is free, and then $25 per year.

Chapter Activities

The chapter meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month, September–May. The date and location should be confirmed with the Chapter Secretary before attending. The Social hour starts at 1800; dinner and program at 1900; usually out by 2030. The March meeting is dedicated to the recognition of the JROTC units in our geographic area. Each of the 9 units are awarded $500 to go toward an activity or project of their choosing. The May meeting is an outdoor barbecue at the renowned Robert Trent Jones Sr designed UGA Golf Course.

Legislative Issues

AAMOAA’s support of national legislative issues mirrors MOAA National Legislative Agenda. Georgia has an extensive network of VA Healthcare Facilities, and the ongoing funding for these services to veterans is always on the National agenda. It appears support for ROTC Units nationwide is a developing issue. In Georgia, the legislative issues are (1) State Income Tax on Retired Pay; (2) The local County School Board Support of JROTC units; (3) Sufficient funding of the GA State Veterans Services, and (4) Support for the local Student Veteran Resource Center at UGA.

General Information

Chapter meetings are normally held on the third Thursday of each month from September to May. Meetings start with a social time (with cash bar) from 1830-1900 followed by dinner at 1900 and a program from 1930-2030. COVID has disrupted the regular meeting schedule and determination will be made at a later date when we will resume meeting on our regular schedule.  Reservation by the Monday prior to the scheduled meeting is the normal procedure.  Cost and location will be announced ASAP.

About Our Chapter

The Athens (Georgia) Area Chapter of The Military Officers Association of America (AAMOAA) was chartered on 23SEP1960 as the Athens Area Chapter of The Retired Officers Association (TROA). The name was changed on January 1, 2003, when the National Organization began operating under its new name. AAMOAA is a member of the Georgia Council of Chapters and has about 50 active members. The chapter meets monthly from September – May. The chapter serves the NE Georgia area, and the membership includes active duty, retired, and former officers and the widows of our former members. The chapter publishes and distributes a monthly newsletter to our members. For any additional, contact the chapter Secretary at AAMOAA.Secretary@gmail.com.
