How to Build Your Network

People often ask, “When is the right time to start networking?” The short answer is now!

In my experience, you should be networking with everyone, everywhere, all the time. If you don’t, you limit your possibilities.

Why? You only have one set of eyes and ears. The more people you connect with – people who really learn and understand your career aspirations – the more opportunities you’ll have to find the right fit with potential employers.

That leads to the next question: “Where do I start?”

Begin with those already in your network, such as family, friends, and work colleagues. Then, grow your network in a targeted fashion via LinkedIn, alumni groups, and professional associations.

How to ‘Make the Sell’

Everyone knows crafting a strong résumé is vital. But separating yourself from the competition really happens through the interview process. Employers want to discern whether you can do the job, will perform in the role, and are a good fit for the organization. Answering those concerns is part of “making the sell.”

One common interviewing mistake is placing too much emphasis on basic aptitude and qualifications as outlined in the vacancy announcement. Employers tend to interview people they feel can do the job – listing the requisite education, experience, and skill sets to accomplish the key roles and responsibilities of the position won’t set you apart from the last candidate, or the next one.

To rise above your competition, articulate your unique value proposition – tell them why they should hire you over the other potentially equally qualified candidates.

How? By demonstrating your direct value to advancing their bottom line. This could mean revenue generation or increased efficiency, effectiveness, or productivity – any unique skills you can bring to make their business more profitable.
