Reliable data points serve as the foundation for informed decision-making and progress-tracking for organizations across various sectors. When it comes to providing research on the military and veteran community, Blue Star Families (BSF) has been at the forefront.

For over a decade, the group’s annual Military Family Lifestyle Survey (MFLS) has provided invaluable insights into the challenges faced by servicemembers, veterans, families, and caregivers. In collaboration with the D'Aniello Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) at Syracuse University, BSF aims to bridge the gap between the military community and society by identifying areas for improvement and offering effective solutions to bolster the health and sustainability of the All-Volunteer Force.

MOAA is one of the primary beneficiaries of the survey data. By deepening our understanding of the lived experiences, challenges, and concerns of servicemembers, retirees, veterans, families, and caregivers, MOAA’s government relations team can better advocate for necessary changes and provide improved policies and support systems.

Insights gleaned from previous surveys have guided MOAA's advocacy efforts, such as our work to restore the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) to 100% and the recent focus on addressing recruitment and retention issues across military branches.

The data and responses captured in the BSF survey play a vital role in shaping the direction of MOAA's advocacy campaigns. By examining trends and patterns, MOAA gains valuable information that helps set baselines, establish benchmarks, and define goals.

Moving From Awareness to Action

The impact of the BSF survey extends beyond raising awareness about the issues faced by military families. It serves as a catalyst for meaningful change.

The data and responses collected directly inform advocacy efforts, driving tangible actions to improve the lives of those who serve and have served our country. By participating in the survey, individuals contribute to a collective voice that strengthens the advocacy for crucial reforms and initiatives.

The survey findings provide evidence-based insights into the challenges faced by military families, highlighting areas that require attention and intervention. Armed with this knowledge, MOAA works toward implementing targeted policies, programs, and resources that address specific concerns identified in the survey.

Transitioning Veterans: A Crucial Focus

Transitioning from military to civilian life poses unique challenges for veterans and their families. Many of the issues faced during active service persist, and identifying and addressing these issues in a timely manner is crucial. The BSF survey recognizes the importance of capturing the experiences and perspectives of veterans, encouraging them and their families to actively participate. By shedding light on these challenges, the survey enables the development of proactive strategies that can improve the overall well-being and support for transitioning veterans.

Ultimately, these efforts seek to ensure a smoother transition, reduce stress, and increase opportunities for success in civilian life.
