What better place to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday than its capital?

“I love watching the fireworks on the National Mall, and the National Park Service plans a spectacular show befitting the occasion,” said Elliott Ferguson II, president and CEO of Destination DC, which markets the city’s tourism opportunities. “As the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., will naturally serve as center stage for America’s 250th birthday,” he added.

“There’s only one place to see our nation’s founding documents, like the Declaration of Independence. With festivals and events stretching from the National Mall through D.C.’s neighborhoods, July 2026 will be a memorable time to be in the city.”

Many of the district’s cultural experiences are free of charge, Ferguson noted. “Visitors and residents alike can discover American history and appreciate D.C.’s local cultural identity at museums, theaters, public art institutions, restaurants, hotels, exciting sports and special events, and more.”

The July 4th Spectacular on Pennsylvania Avenue, which runs July 3-4, 2026, will feature interactive and immersive art-themed and cultural activities.

July 4 offers a chance for visitors to kick back and enjoy activities, games, and performances. An expanded Smithsonian summer festival — “Of the People: The Smithsonian Festival of Festivals” — will take place on the National Mall June 18 to July 12.

Also coming by July 2026 is an immersive museum underneath the Lincoln Memorial meant to provide an in-depth look at the structure’s foundations and showcase exhibits and multimedia presentations that highlight the memorial’s construction.

Something Extra: Ferguson recommends visiting national monuments and memorials at night. “There’s something special about seeing them lit up after sunset. The new World War I Memorial near Freedom Plaza is also not to be missed.”
