What initially attracted you to the Naval Academy?
During my junior year, a midshipman from the academy visited my high school. He had a striking effect on me, and I thought to myself, "I want to be like this person." He was sharp, well-spoken, and had a leadership quality about him. I was attracted to the example the academy stood for.
What did you like most about your time in the military?
The interaction with quality people and the leadership opportunities and growth the Navy provides. All the armed services are full of amazing people.
On Sept. 11, 2001, you suffered burns on 42 percent of your body. How are you feeling today?
Before Sept. 11, I was physically one person. After Sept. 11, I am physically a different person. Today I feel stronger than I ever could have imagined months ago. I find myself thinking about that a lot. I feel incredibly blessed.
What should people learn from your experience?
Physically, never give up. It's a common phrase, but it really sums it up. I never gave up - neither did my wife nor my family. I hit as low of a bottom as humanly possible and here I am. Emotionally, never forget. As time passes we, as Americans, move on and that's a strong characteristic, but we also risk forgetting where we've been. In that sense, my message to everyone is "never forget."
What's in your future?
I've made a decision to dedicate myself to the field of homeland security. Plus, my wife, Blanca, is due with our first child in September. I'm so excited for the privilege of being a father. The time since Sept. 11 has been full of challenges for us, but our future is full of hope and opportunity. And for that, I am thankful beyond words.
