For all the attention paid to his message on Capitol Hill, Gen. David Petraeus, USA, could have stayed in Baghdad and phoned it in. Except for staffers hoping for Gotcha! gaffes, few in attendance listened to what our most successful general in a half-century or Ambassador Ryan Crocker had to say. The members of Congress who drifted in and out of the chambers already had their mini-speeches written and their questions formulated: The testimony may have focused on Iraq, but the inquisitors focused on the November elections.
