Alexandria, Va. – Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) held its 2nd Annual Military Spouse Symposium, on Thursday, June 19, 2008, at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. More than 100 military spouses attended the event to hear panelists discuss building strong military marriages and providing family support.
The one-day event was held in conjunction with the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) and the U.S. Naval Institute Transformation Warfare 2008 Conference, June 17-19, 2008.
Panelists and the audience explored issues of concern to military spouses and the critical role advocacy plays in influencing policy change. Panelists included Carol Fishman Cohen, co-author of Back on the Career Track: A Guide for Stay-at-Home Moms Who Want to Return to Work; Tanya Biank, Author, Army Wives: The Unwritten Code of Military Marriage; MAJ Art Finch, USA, PhD, Psychologist, U.S. Army; Babette Maxwell, Co-Founder and Editor in Chief of Military Spouse Magazine; Krista Wells Ph.D., The Military Spouse Coach®; Thomas Hinton, Senior State Liaison in the Office of the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Military Community & Family Policy), and Phil Dyer, CFP®, RLP®, Deputy Director of Financial Education at MOAA.
“It was incredibly well received and well supported by the local community as evidenced by the incredible news coverage, said Sue Hoppin, Deputy Director for Spouse Outreach of MOAA’s Benefit Information Department, and USAF spouse. “It was tremendously gratifying to be able to bring speakers such as Doc Finch, Carol Cohen and Tanya Biank to the military spouse community of Hampton Roads,” Hoppin continued.
More than 700 spouses and other military family supporters attended the luncheon featuring the Heroes at Home Military Spouse of the Year Recognition and keynote speaker Gen James N. Mattis, USMC, Commander U.S. Joint Forces Command NATO Supreme Allied Commander Transformation.
