CAPT Peterson enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1965 and served in ships of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. He earned his biology degree from the University of Maine and was discharged from the Naval Reserve in 1973 upon being commissioned in the NOAA Corps. In addition to assignments in the administrative, labor relations, career development, research, hydrographic, and diving fields, he served as the chief of personnel for the NOAA Corps, as executive officer in three NOAA ships, and as commanding officer of three other ships during Atlantic and Pacific Ocean deployments. He is a member of the Montgomery County Chapter of MOAA and lives in Derwood, Md.
