Alexandria, Va. (Feb. 21, 2012) — Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) joined the Office of the Secretary of Defense (Reserve Affairs) and Chiefs of the National Guard and Reserves in honoring seven outstanding military family readiness organizations during the 2011 Department of Defense (DoD) Reserve Family Readiness Awards program on Friday, February 17, 2012 in the Hall of Heroes at the Pentagon.

The DoD Reserve Family Readiness Awards were established in 2000 to recognize the top unit in each of the reserve components that demonstrates outstanding family readiness while maintaining superior mission readiness.

David L. McGinnis, Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense (Reserve Affairs), addressed a standing-room-only audience during the program. “The total force is more than the active duty members,” he said, “that’s only part of it. The total force is really the people who make up and man the unit. It includes the family and the employers.”

Retired Navy Vice Adm. Norb Ryan Jr., president of MOAA, joined McGinnis for the award presentation. “On behalf of MOAA, our 377,000 members simply want to say thank you,” Ryan told the honorees. “Leaders make an enormous difference. You motivate us all to do better every day.”

McGinnis presented an engraved commemorative plaque to each organization. Ryan presented a signed certificate of appreciation and a cash reward intended to assist with enhancement of family support programs.  This is the seventh year MOAA has given a monetary award.
