Alexandria, Va. — Lt. Col. Shane Ostrom, CFP®, USAF (Ret), deputy director in Military Officers Association of America (MOAA’s) Transition Center, received the George Alexander Memorial Volunteer Award from The Blinded American Veterans Foundation (BAVF) at their Twenty-Ninth Annual BAVF Congressional Awards reception today on Capitol Hill.

“Ostrom was selected to receive the award because he has been a wonderful resource in Sgt. Shaft, helping many veterans.” said John Fales, president of BAVF who has written the Sgt. Shaft column since 1982.

“I couldn’t be more proud of Shane, an expert on military pay, benefits and finances, for receiving this well-deserved recognition,” MOAA President Vice Adm. Norb Ryan said. “He is a true professional and always ready to assist the military community.”

The George Alexander Volunteer Service Award was created in memory of a friend of American veterans who was quite simply known as "Mr. Volunteer," according to the BAVF.

Alexander is described on the BAVF website as “rarely in the limelight, always there in the trenches, never asking for credit, even when it was so truly warranted, almost embarrassed when the richly deserved credit was given. No project was too small or forbidden to try and tackle. No task was too small or seemingly unimportant that he would not put forth his total commitment and boundless energy.”

Other recipients of the George Alexander Memorial Volunteer Awards were Bruce Davis, Department of Veterans Affairs.

Recipients of the BAVF's George "Buck" Gillispie Congressional Awards were Reps. Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii) and J. Randy Forbes (Va.), the Carlton Sherwood Media Awards were presented to Lindsey Boerma of CBSNews.com and Donna Leinwand Leger of USA Today. The Corporate Volunteer Award will be presented to Ben’s Chili Bowl.
