Guidelines for Freelance Writers

Audience: Commissioned and warrant officers, families, and surviving spouses of the seven uniformed services: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Public Health Service, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration -- to include members of the National Guard and Reserve -- actively serving as well as retired.

Circulation: 325,000 monthly (ABC audited). Sample magazines are available on request with 9x12 SASE. You also may view a digital edition of Military Officer magazine.

Editorial Requirements

Topics: Current military/political affairs; recent military history, especially Vietnam and Korea; personal financial planning; health and fitness; military family issues; retirement lifestyles; travel; and general interest. No fiction, poetry, or fillers. Original material only; no reprints.

Format: MS Word-compatible file. No footnotes.

Deadlines: Feature articles normally are scheduled six months in advance.

Queries: Submit detailed query before sending manuscript. Enclose or attach to email copies of published clips and résumé. Unsolicited manuscripts are rarely accepted.

Style: Active voice, non-technical, with direct quotes. Optimistic, upbeat theme. Use The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual.

Length: Features, between 1,000 and 2,000 words.

Payment: Features, 80 cents/word. Payment on acceptance.

Terms: First rights, to include Internet and reprint rights.

Photographs

Digital photos must be at the highest image size and resolution supported by your camera. Also acceptable are original color transparencies or color prints suitable for reproduction. $75 for one-eighth page, $125 for one-fourth page, $175 for one-half page, $250 for full page. 5x7 or 8x10 black-and-white glossies occasionally acceptable. $20 for each black-and-white photo used. Captions and credit lines should be on separate sheets. Include SASE for return of photos.
