The Winner Is...

Each year, MOAA recognizes councils and chapters that publish outstanding newsletters. The computer age, however, has ushered in many new forms of communication. To keep pace with the times, MOAA has expanded its annual competition to include electronic newsletters, Web sites, and other media.

This year, we received an unprecedented number of top-quality entries. We commend the editors and webmasters who took time to enter our contest, and we congratulate the winners listed on these pages.

A closer look at council and chapter achievements

Special Recognition

The Florida Council of Chapters
For its Florida Military Message Center/Interstate Military Message Center (FMMC/IMMC). The FMMC is comprised of three e-mail networks operated by volunteers from the Florida Council of Chapters. These networks are used to communicate with council and chapter leaders and veterans’ organizations in the state and to transmit MOAA’s weekly Legislative Update and e-mail alerts.

The IMMC e-mail network also is operated by council volunteers. This interstate, intercouncil, and interassociation tool allows the council to share news and information with anyone who is interested in the association’s eight missions.

Pennsylvania Council of Chapters
For publishing its quarterly council “Tips” that provide chapter leaders with helpful hints on a variety of important topics.

Tampa Chapter’s Military Officers Wives Club
For Chit Chat, an excellent print and electronic publication edited by Emily Povey. Chit Chat began publication around 1962 and has a circulation of approximately 250.

New Awards—The Inside Story

For years, I have said that a chapter newsletter is the glue that holds the organization together. Give me a good, interesting, informative newsletter and I will show you a thriving chapter. We recently concluded our new communications awards contest and for the first time included Web sites and electronic newsletters.

The judges looked at the e-mail newsletters and Web sites for accurate and up-to-date information, overall design, and relevancy. For printed newsletters, the judges used three criteria: news value or content, presentation, and their overall impression of the publication. News value was the most critical factor, and the judges were particularly impressed by newsletters that, in a straightforward way, conveyed as much useful information as possible, or employed the KISS rule—keep it simple so-and-so, but informative. A newsletter that accurately detailed an upcoming event in 50 words was judged higher than one that took 150 words to do the same. If a newsletter reprinted a meaningful article, say from The Affiliate, that too was considered important.

The judges’ comments regarding presentation or format also were enlightening. While most newsletters, both print and electronic, were very tastefully done, some were judged too busy, to the point that the color actually detracted from the content. Likewise, readability was considered extremely important; font size was taken into consideration.

Finally, the overall impression left with the reader was critical.

The judges said their “gut reaction” to the communication form as a whole played a major part in their ultimate decisions.

In the final analysis, the judges reported there were some tough contests and that all entrants were exceptional and should be proud of their publications. I couldn’t agree more! Those of you who make your newsletter or Web site the best it can be are the heroes of the chapter world. While your entry might not have been judged to be one of the best, you all are still winners because you do what it takes to keep your members informed and interested. My hat is off to each of you.

Members Share Wartime Memories With Elementary School Students

Eighth-grade students at Ripon Elementary School in Ripon, Calif., know a little bit more about the military and our nation’s veterans, thanks to three members of the Santa Cruz (Calif.) Chapter.

Chapter First Vice President Lt. Col. Henry Temme, USAF-Ret., his wife, June, and Lt. Col. Ed Kalina, USA-Ret., drove more than 180 miles round-trip to speak to students at the school. The three were part of a group of military members and veterans who were invited to share their memories with students.

Temme and Kalina, who both are World War II veterans, brought medals, money from faraway lands, aircraft photos, and other props that illustrated what life was like for members of America’s “greatest generation.” June Temme, who taught at Ripon Elementary in 1941, shared her memories of what life was like on the home front.

Several students asked about the types of weapons used in World War II. Others were amused to learn how soldiers on water-starved Pacific islands took their baths in rainwater that was collected in 55-gallon drums.

Following their presentation, the three fielded students’ questions. One student wanted to know how the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor influenced America’s entry into World War II. Another student asked why only women were portrayed on the nose sections of aircraft. Temme smoothly explained it was our troops’ way of showing appreciation for the loved ones they had left behind.

“I would say that [the presentation] was well received,” says Temme. “We were really very appreciative of the response we received from the students.”

The trip to Ripon marked the second time chapter members have shared their wartime memories with area students. Three years ago, Cmdr. Richard Allen, USN-Ret.; Capt. John Siembiech, USN-Ret.; Lt. Cmdr. Arthur Wells, USN-Ret.; and Temme addressed students at the University of California–Santa Cruz.

“We did that on Sept. 12, 2001—one day after the terrorist attack,” says Temme. “We came expecting to speak to about 30 or 40 students. As it turned out, they put us in a lecture hall, and we spoke to about 250 kids.”

The chapter members later received several thank-you letters from professors at the university who remarked about the effect they had on the students. Following the chapter members’ presentations, several students indicated they were going to ask their grandparents about their military service. Others requested videotape copies of the presentation, which had been filmed.

The 100-plus members of the Santa Cruz Chapter undertake many other activities, including a scholarship program for area high school students. This year, they plan to give away two $1,000 scholarships to outstanding college-bound students. The chapter also has its own newsletter and Web site that keep members apprised of upcoming events.
