Lowcountry Families in World War II: A Memorial. By Gen. Jacob E. Smart, USAF-Ret.
The first 459 pages of the book is a description of the actions of World War II, including the events that led up to the war. The book is divided into parts, in which the actions that took place in the theaters of war are fully described. There are 85 maps that further describe various military operations. The last 720 pages of the book contain biographical information of many South Carolina Lowcountry citizens and their roles in the war. (The South Carolina Lowcountry is defined as the counties of Jasper, Colleton, Hampton, and Beaufort). Many of these biographical sketches contain personal interview material. The book was written to memorialize the participants in the war for their grandchildren. Smart donated all rights to the Jasper County Historical Society, Ridgeland, S.C., of which he is a past president and Director Emeritus.

This book describes the naval career of the USS Wasmuth, a destroyer built shortly after World War I. On Dec. 27, 1942, during a furious winter storm, depth charges on the main deck got loose, exploded, and ripped off her stern. The heroic actions of an accompanying Navy tanker, the USS Ramapo, took the sting out of the disaster by rescuing the entire crew. Throughout the years, the crews have remained in close contact and will be “mates forever.”

Prior to World War II, an aging submarine is selected for a highly secret espionage mission. Badly in need of repairs, it is hastily modified, provisioned, and dispatched to Japan. The submarine experiences material casualties enroute. After probing the entrance to Kagoshima Wan they determine there is extensive aerial bombing and torpedo practice underway. The submarine is detected by the Japanese and is vigorously attacked. Oil leaks confirm there is a submarine on the bottom and an attempt is made to demolish or salvage the submarine by the Japanese. Heroic damage control efforts made by the submarine’s crew are successful and the submarine is able to make a hair-raising escape. They are able to make a tortuous but undetected trip to Midway. They cannot receive help from that base but disembark two-thirds of the crew. The submarine is towed to Pearl Harbor and arrives on Dec. 7, 1941.
