Mission

We are primarily a member service organization. It is the mission of the Sandhills MOAA Chapter to foster comradeship among our members by providing them a program of fun and enriching events and activities, to help our members and their survivors in times of need, and to serve our community through the volunteer efforts of our members and financial contributions. We also support the goals and objectives of national MOAA to the best of our ability.

About Our Chapter

The Sandhills Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) was chartered in 1979. We are the largest Chapter in North Carolina with a membership of about 335 currently serving, former and retired officers from all of the uniformed services, and surviving family members. We annually receive recognition from National MOAA as one of the top Chapters in the nation. As military officers we shared common bonds of service to our country, loyalty to our comrades and pride in our enlisted servicemen. Our Chapter furthers those bonds by providing opportunities for fellowship with our fellow officers and opportunities for service to our community, in addition to a program of luncheons, dinners, military speakers, ceremonies and special events. Our members also take an active role in promoting legislation at the national and state level that affects prior officers and that promotes a strong national defense.

Information on Joining the Chapter

Chapter membership is open to anyone who is a currently serving, or a retired, or a former officer in any of the uniformed services. Members of our Chapter pay annual dues of $25. Chapter members must also join National MOAA (www.moaa.org) when joining the Sandhills Chapter. Joining our Chapter is easy, and we are always looking for new members. The best way to join is to call our membership chairman who will send you an application for membership. Our membership chairman for 2011 is Bob Fazio who can be reached at 910 295-4631 or at FAZ@embarqmail.com . Other questions about the Sandhills Chapter can be addressed to Jack Wood, Chapter President, at 910 255-6481 or jwood008@nc.rr.com , or to Vice President, Paul Higgins, 910 295-4072 or phiggins4@nc.rr.com .

Chapter Activities

Program: The activities of our Chapter includes two luncheons and one evening dinner each quarter. At each function we have a well known and knowledgeable speaker, who generally gives a talk on a subject related to contemporary military issues or military history. Our lunches and dinners are informal, and spouses and guests are always welcome. In addition, we sponsor annual Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies, and an annual golf tournament to which we invite active service personnel as our guests. Community Service Activities: Our Chapter sponsors and manages the annual Empty Stocking Fund campaign in Moore County, a program to link over 1000 needy families with sponsors who purchase and deliver gifts at Christmas. We also raise money to award 8 scholarships a year to outstanding ROTC cadets at regional high schools. Our Chapter supports the Fisher House at Fort Bragg with an annual donation, and we also contribute annually to the USO of North Carolina.

Legislative Issues

National MOAA has a major voice on Capitol Hill. MOAA represents the interests of retirees, veterans, and prior service officers, and is an advocate of a strong national defense. Our Chapter members stay abreast of the issues and participate in campaigns to influence the outcome of congressional action on bills of interest. We are also active in promoting the interests of veterans and military retires at the state level.

General Information

All of our activities and events are held in the Pinehurst - Southern Pines area. Our luncheons and evening dinners are generally held on the third Tuesday of each month at a local club. Our activities are quite popular so it is important to make a reservation. This past year our annual formal Christmas dinner dance at the Pinehurst Country Club was attended by nearly 100 members and guests. Wives, family members, guests and especially prospective members are always welcome at all Chapter events. There are plenty of opportunities for members to get involved in community service activities and other Chapter activities and events. Our Chapter publishes a monthly newsletter that is emailed or mailed to all members. Our newsletter gets the word out to everyone regarding upcoming events, key legislative issues, other items of interest, and changes in our membership. Our Chapter annually publishes a listing of all members with addresses, email addresses and phone numbers. We hope you consider joining the Sandhills MOAA Chapter and reestablishing ties with your military experience and your fellow comrades-in-arms.
