CAPT McDonald served as a boatswain's mate in the Coast Guard Reserve, earned his accounting degree from San Francisco State College, and was commissioned in 1964. As a junior officer he served as an administrative officer in the San Francisco area and used his skills as a certified public accountant to audit the non-appropriated fund activities of various Coast Guard shore commands. He served in Long Beach as the executive officer of a boating-safety unit, commanded a Reserve marine safety unit in San Diego, and commanded a repair and maintenance unit in Stockton, Calif. His civilian career was in the public-accounting field as both a partner in a national accounting firm and from 1990 to 2003 as a sole practitioner. He also served as chief financial officer of various publicly traded corporations. He resides in Menlo Park, Calif.
