OVATION

CW04 KIM ADAMSON, USMCR.

AGE:
50
HOMETOWN: Holladay, Utah
POSITION:
Salt Lake County Justice Court judge; U.S. Marine Corps reservist; member of the Women Marines Association. Activated October 2001 and currently serving as the staff secretary to the commanding general at Marine Corps Base, Quantico.

You originally joined the Marine Corps in 1974—what was it that attracted you?
I’ve always been a bit of a tomboy and at the time the Vietnam War was at its height and I was very patriotic. I wanted to be a part of it as a nurse in a MASH unit. But, by the time I got around to joining, the war was ending. I liked the looks of the USMC reserve program. They looked the best, were very fit, and there weren’t a lot of women in the Corps at the time. It was really competitive and I was motivated by the challenge to get in.

What’s different for women who are joining the Marine Corps today?
Everything—the uniform, the attitudes, the increased exposure to different jobs. Even the physical fitness standards have changed for the better.

If a young woman were to come to you seeking advice about joining the Corps, what would you tell her?
Before I could give her any direction, I’d have to hear her goals first. The Corps isn’t for everyone, but it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. I wouldn’t be a judge if I weren’t a Marine. I’ve been successful and have no complaints. I want to keep the Marine Corps a part of that.

Are you enjoying your latest active duty assignment?
Initially, I was unhappy—this is the longest I’ve been on active duty. But now I realize I’ve learned a lot in this job. Really, you can plug me in anywhere and I’ll find a way to fit in.
