Fly South to Florida for the Winter

By Maryann Hammers

Snow birds, rejoice! If you’re flying South for the winter, we’ve found these sunny offers, with military rates starting at under $100.

Daytona Beach

Shores Resort, a 212-room, four-diamond luxury beachfront retreat, has announced a $79 midweek military rate ($99 on weekends). That’s about a 20-percent savings off the regular price. Rooms have private balconies or terraces, from which you can take in views of the Atlantic Ocean or Intracoastal Waterway. Luxury amenities include private poolside and beachfront cabanas, oceanside fire pits, and a spa. The military offer is valid through Dec. 31, 2014. For information, call (866) 934-7467 or book online using promo code MILTSH.

Hawks Cay Resort on the small island of Duck Key, welcomes servicemembers with room rates starting at $109 (heck of a deal, considering the regular rate is around $249). Plus servicemembers also get discounts on spa treatments, dive excursions, Segway tours, and the Island Adventure Camp for kids (two-for-one admission). The 60-acre resort has 177 guest rooms and 225 villas with two and three bedrooms, plus a marina, several restaurants, five swimming pools, tennis, and activities from kayaking to kiteboarding. The Heroes Salute package is valid through Dec. 18, 2014. Call (877) 484-9342 to learn more.

Orlando

You probably already know about the military deal at Disney World, but our friend Jennifer Juergens at Visit Orlando reminds us there’s much more to see and do in Orlando — plus the city offers a long list of military discounts at theme parks, attractions, restaurants, shopping, and hotels (with accommodations starting at just $59 or 50 percent off). Here are a few highlights:

The three-diamond, 640-room Clarion Inn Lake Buena Vista offers military members 50 percent off accommodations and also half off food and beverages. It’s a short drive to Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando. Call (866) 506-7300.

The newest hotel in the area is the four-diamond, 315-room Westin Orlando Universal Boulevard. All rooms have kitchenettes or full kitchens, and self-parking is free. Servicemembers get a 40-percent discount. Call (407) 233-2200 for more information.

And right across from Universal Orlando, Holiday Inn has military rates starting at $59 — plus free parking, WiFi, and meals for kids age 12 and under. Call (800) 326-1364. Use offer code IPTR2.

Would you like to see a show while you’re in town? Winter Park Playhouse has a buy-one-get-one-free deal for active duty servicemembers. Call (407) 645-0145.

Want to practice your swing? Dewey’s Indoor Golf & Sports Grill offers servicemembers a free hour of golf simulator time. Cal (407) 279-3311. Or how about free bowling (and free shoe rental, too) at Kings Bowl Orlando? Just show proof of service. Call (407) 363-0200.
