The mission of the South Shore Chapter is to support the members of the uniformed services, currently serving and retired. We also provide support for service families and survivors. We devote time at our meetings to stay informed about military organizations and activity so that we can support at both the state and federal levels. We also support the ROTC program at Northeastern University and the JrROTC programs at Taunton, Brockton and North Quincy high schools.
Information on Joining the Chapter
Our chapter welcomes new members to our activities. The modest $15 dues for a calendar year cover the costs for mailings, email services and administrative costs. The membership director is LTC (USAR-ret) Joe Murray. He can be reached at (508) 378-3944 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Auxiliary members (surviving spouses of members or officers eligible for membership) pay an even more modest $10 a year. Our auxiliary members are valued participants and we strongly encourage their continuance as part of their service.
Our regular meetings include Happy Hour, a fine three-course dinner at a reasonable price (currently $22 per person; tax and tip inclusive), and either informative speakers or entertainment. Our focus is current military affairs, benefits for retirees and veterans, and history of military operations and people. Entertainment is usually the focus of our December holiday party. Four ROTC programs are supported with awards and monetary gifts – three Jr ROTC programs at Taunton, Brockton and North Quincy High Schools and one senior ROTC program based at Northeastern University that serves NU, Boston College, Wentworth Institute, Suffolk University and other area colleges.
We meet March through June, take a summer break, reconnect September through December (special holiday party), and then avoid the difficult winter months of January and February. We get a fresh start every spring!
South Shore Chapter meetings are dinner meetings held the second Wednesday of every month, March through June and September through December. We take the winter months off due to weather and the large number of members that spend time in warmer places. During July and August many of our members are at their summer residences on Cape Cod or a northern lake. Our meetings are held at the Hearth & Kettle Restaurant on Rt. 18, Weymouth, starting at 6:00 PM. We enjoy a social period, a three-course dinner, and either an informative presentation or entertainment. The modest price of $22 per person includes tax and tip.
About Our Chapter
The South Shore Chapter was founded over 40 years ago and has met in the Weymouth area since its formation. For most of its years the chapter met at the Officers Club in the Weymouth Naval Air Station. Since the base closure it has met monthly March through June and September through December and presently meets at the Hearth & Kettle Restaurant, Rt. 18 Weymouth. We enjoy a social half-hour, dinner and a speaker or entertainment. The chapter has about 100 members including currently serving officers, mostly from reserve components, retired officers and surviving spouses. At a typical meeting we will have 30-40 people attending the event. The chapter publishes a monthly newsletter that announces the next meeting and provides for reservations, summarizes the past meeting and makes announcements. It distributes via email and US Mail to those non-electronic members. This is the primary means members are notified about meetings and receive other news of chapter importance.
